The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
